May 6th, 2009 by Dr. Harshad Raval (M.D. Homeopathy)

Now a day’s young people’s most common complaint is of falling hair, dandruff, gray hair, baldness, loss of hair in young girls, hair not growing properly, etc. Falling of hair or its poor growth is not due to external factors but it is affected by our mental as well as physical causes.

An adult head has around 100,000 hair follicles. We naturally lose around 100 hairs per day which are naturally replaced all the time. So, if we find some hairs on the pillow or hairbrush it does not mean that we are suffering from alopecia or baldness.

Today the market is flooded with different types of medicines, shampoos, hair oils, lotions and what not as solutions for hair loss. But most of these do not work and actually make the young men and women poorer by few dollars exploiting their psychology.

In allopathic medicine, monoxide, hormone therapy and steroids are used with limited success though the side effects are abundant like skin irritation, palpitations, scarring of the scalp, weight gain, metabolic abnormalities, acne and menstrual problems.

Homeopathy on the other end is an ideal solution. The treatment is decided after a complete and thorough case history taken by a qualified homeopathic doctor. In homeopathy there are 176 remedies for alopecia or hair loss and the homeopath has to analyze your case systematically to choose the right medicine for you. This is what makes homeopathy safe, sure and systematic for alopecia or hair loss treatment.

All of us have hair on top and back of our heads. When this hair starts disappearing it is called alopecia, hair loss or baldness.

Usually the hair grows at the rate of 6 inches per year. Hairs which we see are composed of dead keratin cells which are pushed outwards by the new cells produced by the hair follicles

FACTS ABOUT HAIRS:

A Person has nearly 50, 00,000(5 million) hairs on all over the body. 120,000 hairs only on scalp. Hairs on scalp grows continually for 5 years, after that hair stop to grow and after few weeks they fall out. Then new hair start to grow from same hair roots, up to 100 hairs fall everyday normally. Growth of hair depends upon health status of person and blood supply to hair roots.

.

CAUSES OF HAIR LOSS:

A person may have an allergy and the body’s immune system will attack the allergen and the hair strand falls out. Another cause of falling of hair or baldness is abuse of street drugs like cocaine and many others which do cause hair loss. Side effects of prescription drugs, especially high blood pressure medication

Thyroid Disorders, Anemia Low hemoglobin level in blood, generally in females.
Diabetes, Fungus infection of hair roots. Major surgical procedure or some chronic illness, Insufficient diet specially low protein diet, Allergic Disorders

Nutritional deficiencies, in particular a lack of zinc or iron in your diet may cause hair loss. Toxic metals or heavy metal poisoning is definitely a cause of hair loss. Pesticides and herbicides can cause hair loss.

Hair fall out also occurs as a result of radiation exposure. In fact if you use a microwave oven you are exposed to radiation. Fungal infections, hair dyes, cancerous moles, hypothyroid disease, genetic tendencies, aging, anti-cancer treatment, skin disorders, alcoholic beverages, and even a reaction to traction from hair braiding are all reasons for hair to fall out.

GENETIC CAUSES:

Disposable Genes from our parents influence our tendency to have male or female pattern baldness. Severe illness, Iron deficiency following child birth, extreme stress, general anesthesia, high fever and Hormonal imbalance are also causes that could result in loss of hair prematurely.

Medical treatments like chemotherapy used in cancer, anticoagulants and beta-adrenergic blockers used to control blood pressure, oral contraceptives and retinoid used in treatment of acne and skin diseases, Burns, X-rays, scalp injuries could also attribute to baldness.

HOME MEDICINE:

Herbal or homeopathic Shampoos and Conditioners do not treat baldness but overusing them actually causes dryness of scalp and hair. All shampoos are just scented detergents with lathering agent; even the ones which are called natural, herbal or vitamin enhanced.

Combing your Hair with proper hair brushing is very important as it distributes the hair’s natural oil. It is useful for the long-term health of your hair and scalp than wasting money on hair care products. Start with 10 to 20 strokes a day and try to work up to 100. Be gentle and avoid brushing when your hair is wet.

Meditations, Pranayama and Yoga help in relaxation of stress which may be a factor in some cases of hair loss.

Vegetable and balanced diet including fruits should become a norm in daily diet.

Try to avoid hot curlers, hair dryers, hair straightening, bleaches and cosmetics filled with chemicals which eventually result in broken, dry and thinning of hair. People who leave their hair in natural texture and color are better off. Why put stress on yourself in pursuit of beauty?

CONVENTIONAL TREATMENT:

Common falling of hair or Baldness has no effective treatment. Lotion Minoxidil used to improve blood supply of scalp. A pill Finasteride is used to block the effect of Male Hormones (Androgens) on hair roots. But this medicine can produce Birth Defects in Pregnant Women. Alopecia Aerata is reversed in 50% cases spontaneously in 6 months to 1 year. But the remaining cases need Treatment. Oral steroids and injections are prescribed but cure is very less.
